Water companies dumped 10,000 hours’ worth of raw sewage in rivers

Water companies dumped raw sewage for more than 10,000 hours last year from pipes meant to be used only for emergencies. There are approximately 7,000 permitted emergency overflows in England, which can only be used in “urgent circumstances” to prevent sewage backing up in homes.
