Starmer’s parting gift is to undermine his most effective minister

There was some surprise yesterday that Mike Tapp, the immigration minister, was not fired from the Government, despite losing the confidence of his boss, the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood. At the time of writing the Dover MP remains a minister, despite having broken collective ministerial responsibility to advocate a policy which is contrary to the Home Secretary’s – and therefore the Government’s – position.
