The most unusual thing about Labour’s landslide victory in the general election of 2024 was the gap between its colossal majority of 174 and the small total of its votes – 9,708,716. Only once in the past century (Labour in 2005, post-Iraq war) has a party won an overall majority with fewer than 10 million votes.
