Rioters demand suspected killer be released to face Aboriginal ‘payback’

Riots broke out in an Australian outback town on Thursday night as an Aboriginal community demanded a man arrested over the death of a five-year-old girl be forced to endure traditional “payback” rather than be taken into custody. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd on Friday morning as hundreds of people tried to stop them from evacuating Jefferson Lewis, the man named as the prime suspect in the alleged abduction and murder of a child whose body was found in the Northern Territory desert.
